Toxic packaging bill moves to the Senate

A bill to phase out toxic packaging has moved out of the Assembly, and to the Senate. The bill AB 2505 (Brownley) will phase out the use of nonrecyclable, hazardous PVC resin for packaging classes where there are known, cost-comparable alternatives in abundance.

Legislators encouraging Congress to ban phthalates from toys and childcare products  
National Caucus of Environmental Legislators - May 29

Legislators are expected to encourage Congress to ban phthalates from toys and childcare products when it takes up legislation to update US consumer protection laws. To date, California, Vermont, and Washington have banned the use of phthalates in toys and childcare products. In 2008, over a dozen other states introduced legislation to ban phthalates in toys, many sponsored by NCEL participants.

Playtex sued in Arkansas, could spark class action lawsuit over bisphenol A
AHN Media Corp - May 31

An Arkansas woman is suing Playtex over a dangerous chemical in plastic baby bottles that's linked to serious health problems. The lawsuit is the latest challenge involving Bisphenol A. The attorneys are hoping to turn this into a class action lawsuit for thousands of people who bought plastic bottles containing the chemical. The suit cites hundreds of studies and papers that show BPA can be toxic even at extremely low doses.

AB 1860 Update

California proposed bill on product recalls, AB 1860, has passed the Assembly and is now under consideration by the California Senate. The bill would prohibit the sale of unsafe products and would require manufacturers to provide for the safe return and disposal of the product at no cost to the end consumer or retailer. The bill would also require manufactures to initiate steps to inform its customers about the recall. Retailers would be required to remove the product from shelves and preventing future sales of the product.
