FAQs
How
long is the summer program?
Our
summer program is ten weeks long, which usually begins in late May.
What
is the hiring criteria for summer associates?
The firm
seeks students that have an outstanding academic record along with
excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Our goal is to
hire students that show a high level of maturity, good judgment
and a willingness to assume responsibility and have a well-rounded
experience both in their scholastic and professional careers. Other
factors that affect the decision process are student's extracurricular
activities such as law review and moot court and the student's non-academic
experience as well.
How and when do students apply for the
summer program?
The firm begins
accepting summer program applications from second year law students
in August. As part of the recruiting process, we also participate
in several on-campus events beginning in late August through September.
Students at schools where we participate in on-campus interviews
should submit resumes to their Career Services Office. Other students
may submit their cover letter, resume and transcripts by fax or
mail to the Director of Legal Recruiting directly, specifying which
office they are interested in. Callback interviews are generally
scheduled during the months of September through November.
What
should be expected at a callback interview?
Interviews are
generally half-day schedules in which students have the opportunity
to meet with various attorneys from different practice groups.
Will the firm reimburse travel expenses
associated with the callback interview for out of town students?
Yes. Reasonable
travel expenses approved by the Director of Legal Recruiting will
be reimbursed.
Does the firm allow split summers between
Allen Matkins offices?
Yes. If a summer
clerk wishes to spend time in more than one Allen Matkins office,
he or she must spend ten (10) weeks with Allen Matkins.
Does
the firm allow splits with other firms?
Splitting between Allen Matkins and another firm is strongly discouraged.
A split summer generally does not permit enough time for the summer
clerk to become familiar with each office or for the attorneys and
recruiting personnel in each office to become familiar with the
summer clerk and his or her work.
What is required of a summer associate in order to get an offer
of employment?
The Allen Matkins
summer program is used to fill our expected first year associate
staffing needs. We hope to make full-time offers to summer associates
whose work performance and personal characteristics demonstrate
an ability to excel in our firm's environment. Attorneys are encouraged
to provide summer associates with feedback for all assigned projects,
and a mid-summer review is conducted to improve their skills and
performance for the remainder of the program.
What
type of works assignments should summer associates expect?
Summer associates
are given a variety of projects from the firm's different practice
areas. It is the firm's goal that its summer program expose the
students to the practice of law, both through research and real-life
experience. Each summer associate is assigned a mentor who is responsible
for ensuring his/her broad exposure to our firm and the realities
of practicing law. Work assignments include traditional legal research,
drafting of memoranda, and preparation of transactional documents
and pleadings. Summer associates are also invited to attend meetings
and conferences with clients and opposing parties, court appearances
and hearings, transactional closings, depositions and trials to
expose them to the day to day legal environment of the firm.
