Allen Matkins recognizes that our society cannot reach its full potential without honoring diversity, equity, and inclusion in our communities. While the past year’s tragic events, including George Floyd and many others, has spurred national conversation on combatting racism, racialized violence has persisted. In recent weeks, and since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, our nation has seen a disturbing rise in violence against Asians, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders (AAPI).
The tragic events in Atlanta are not isolated incidents. A report by Stop AAPI Hate, a national initiative that has tracked anti-Asian hate and discrimination in the United States, documented 3,795 firsthand accounts of anti-Asian hate from March 2020 through February 2021. Hate incidents were reported from all fifty states and 44% of the documented incidents (1,691) occurred in California alone. While the scourge of anti-Asian racism is not new, this alarming increase in xenophobic acts must be condemned.
