Given uncertainty in the economy and the government's role in healthcare, last week Bisnow convened a panel of top notch experts to discuss what it means for CRE. Below are video clips of each of the panelists, which provide an informative recap of the event.

Gary McKitterick Allen Matkins

Gary McKitterick says that whatever the Supreme Court rules next month, the problems of US healthcare will not change. Mainly, that 20% of US GDP will go toward healthcare by 2020, but Americans' life expectancy still lags behind the rest of the developed world, who pay less for their healthcare.

Alicia Wachtel

HOK's Alicia Wachtel talked about the recent change from thinking big in hospital design to thinking more efficient. "If we build, how do we do it in the most efficient manner? How do we do more with less?"

Shane Seitz

Lillibridge's Shane Seitz noted the uncertainty in the medical profession. "Physicians want one-year leases," he says, explaining how that uncertainty impacts medical property owners. "As an owner of real estate, there's no real value to that."

Sean Moghavem

Archway Holdings' Sean Moghavem detailed the proliferation of healthcare clinics, including one that "wanted to be everywhere Starbucks is." Not in high-priced real estate, but in less expensive locations—and sometimes they're competing across the street, just like Walgreens and CVS.

Sanford Smith

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian's Sanford Smith explained that his hospital has been asking itself, "Why do we do things where we're doing them, and why are they organized the way they are? Let's deconstruct the hospital."

Michael Huaco

Kaiser Permanente's Michael Huaco posited that regardless of what the Supreme Court does, the industry's focus on cost-containment is permanent. The growth in outpatient care is a major factor in the trend, and the hospital is taking advantage of that by repositioning office buildings as MOBs.

John Wadsworth

Colliers' John Wadsworth says that healthcare tenants are thinking, "How can we get the most flexibility at the lowest cost?" Owners are thinking the exact opposite. "How do you bridge the difference?"
